Hello and welcome to the Chiikawa Resource Page, where I list helpful and fun assets for any and all Chiikawa fans!
If you are from the west, you likely have not even the slightest idea of what Chiikawa is. According to https://chiikawainfo.carrd.co/, “‘Chiikawa’ is an abbreviation of ‘Something Small and Cute’ (nanka chiisakute kawaii yatsu) in Japanese. It is a story about small and cute characters with eccentric personalities who live in a fun yet dismal world. Chiikawa is created by the illustrator Nagano and uploaded as a webcomic to Twitter, published as a manga, and adapted into an anime.”
Personally, if I were to describe Chiikawa, I would describe it as a dark fantasy that is the epitome of bittersweet. The main darker themes present are death, poverty, (very mild) cartoon violence, monsters, looming dread/uncertainty and general misfortune. Despite these elements, the story follows three friends who always manage to find positivity even in difficult situations. In my opinion, the story masterfully balances both humor and deep emotion, showcasing the author’s remarkable ability to not only express but also evoke a wide range of feelings in the audience. I have cried several times while reading the manga because Nagano is so skilled at getting you to feel empathy for the characters when they are in complex situations. It is worth noting that the series is considered family-friendly and popular with children as well as adults in the east. If I were to recommend the series to an audience, I’d suggest it to those eight years old and any older age.
From the outside looking in, it is easy to write the series off as just another cute character made to sell merchandise. You may be thinking, “Oh, Chiikawa is just one of the millions of Japanese anime out there, blah blah blah,” but that’s where you would be mistaken. Chiikawa is INSANELY popular in Asian countries; particularly in Japan, China, and South Korea. By insane, I mean people are traveling out of the country to scalp products in specialty stores that are so populated the line is out the door. Regardless of the Chiikawa ‘fever’ that has taken over the east, that intense popularity does not extend to the west, at least as of now. It is because of this that I want to provide some fun and free resources for any upcoming or current western Chiikawa fan.

A mass comparison of all Japanese proxies

[TRICK] Line is a messaging app that is popular in Asia but used all over the world. While there are many Chiikawa sticker packs available in both the west and east, Nagano will sometimes release time sensitive Chiikawa sticker packs for only those in Japan. However, it is actually possible to get these as well as other Japanese exclusive stickers by using a VPN. I personally use Surfshark.
[SHOP] As you can tell by the list previously made in this article, there are many Japanese proxies. Many people find choosing one to be a little intimidating at first, but it doesn’t have to be! I personally use Doorzo, while I’ve heard many in the Chiikawa community use Neokyo. Make sure you do lots of research to find the one that works for you.
[SHOP] Speaking of proxy services, the official Chiikawa store, https://chiikawamarket.jp/, has a officially partnered proxy called WorldShopping. It is a legitimate service; I have been told it is a little expensive but ships faster than many proxies. I heard from someone that they got a free cup when they ordered from ChiikawaMarket via WorldShopping.
[LORE] None of the characters in Chiikawa have a specified age, sexuality, or gender. The author, Nagano, has stated this is intentional. It is a common belief that Chiikawa, Usagi, and Hachiware are all children or at least younger. In contrast, most believe both Rakko and Kurimanju are adults.
[LORE] Another common question regarding the lore of the series is “what species is Chiikawa?” Their name means ‘something small and cute’, which tells us this ambiguity is purposeful (Most of Chiikawa’s characters are named directly after their appearance or species.) Despite their species being intentionally vague, it is commonly believed that Chiikawa is either a bear or a hamster.
[LORE] The world in Chiikawa functions vastly different than the real world which may confuse new readers/watchers. Here is a list of general lore regarding the series (ZERO SPOILERS):
• Characters make money by doing mundane tasks such as weed picking, sticking stickers on fruit, and hunting monsters. These jobs require a license which they attend class for. The licenses go from level 5 (lowest) to level 1 (highest.)
• No one outside of Mr. Armors / Yoroi-sans (humanoid characters that wear armor) can own a business, but they can work for a already established one.
• While characters can cook, meals/ingredients will randomly spawn in the world like giant puddings or rivers of chocolate. The frequency of this spawning fluctuates.
• Background characters are portrayed as green silhouettes that are called Mob-chans.
