[Guide] Ethical Reselling, What Is It?

Many people have a strong viewpoint on resellers without even realizing it. you may have heard people say things like: “I hate resellers, they take all the good products and charge way to much for them!” Especially recently where reselling has become a more common practice. But did you know that just like with any business, there are actually ethical ways to run a reselling business? Below I am going to tell you a few ways you can ensure your reselling business is ethical, as well as some personal tips that may help you!

General:

  1. Ethical Resellers do not scalp. Scalping refers to buying a large quantity of items at a small price to turn around and resell them to gain a large profit. Usually this price is over twice the market value and the only reason these items sell is the seller is taking advantage of desperate and impatient people. Scalpers will also often use illegal means to get around purchase limits or win bids on websites such as eBay. Scalpers are seen as the scum of the earth when it comes to reselling.
  1. We don’t fight with each other like middle age women over a vacuum cleaner on Black Friday. The reselling game is first come first serve and while I know that someone else getting a good deal can be disappointing, we should treat each other with respect. This means no fighting and stealing from each others carts. If you think you spot a reseller in the same store as you, try to take that opportunity to learn! What type of items are they grabbing? Is this something you can apply to your business practice?
  1. Always inform your buyer of the item’s condition. Not only is this just a moral thing to do, but it also prevents a issue possibly arising later. Trust me, you would rather miss out on a potential sale then have a angry customer.
  1. Listen to your customers; especially if they have complaints or concerns. It is easy to start to become upset and panick when a customer has something potentially negative to say. However, sit back and try to think how you would feel if you were experiencing what they are going through. Would you be upset or frustrated? Is there anyway you can help them? Know that your behavior towards the customer is a direct reflection of your business, regardless of how they act towards you.
  1. We are always learning, it’s okay to make mistakes! The most important aspect of your business is that you are making the effort to improve and provide quality service to customers. Customers tend to be way more understanding than you would think, and most would appreciate being told about a issue than finding about it later. Doing so along with resolving any issues professionally helps maintain trust with the customer and prevent any further issues. Try to use any mistakes and criticism to find what you need to improve on the most!

Personal Tips:

Well now that you’ve scratched the surface on what makes ethical reseller; here is a few tips and tricks that I personally use or have used in the past! You don’t have to follow this section of the list to be a ethical reseller, but I find these tips and resources can help!

  • Take pictures of sold item, then the packaging just before shipping, and post office receipt. Doing so functions as evidence for how you packaged the item, how much the item weighed, etc Incase the customer or shipping company files a claim.
  • My personal business practice is Id rather a toy collectible be enjoyed then be taken to be sold. If I see a child wanting or showing interest in a item I want I forfeit.
  • USPS has a resource that if you lose a package you can file a search request online. I have actually found a customers package this way, so it is a extremely useful tool to have. Examples when to use this: Item was forwarded to the wrong address, Item was labelled as delivered but it did not arrive, etc.
